How to level up your small talk?

1. Make people feel comfortable

No matter the situation, make sure the person you're talking to feels comfortable. They're not in a rush, they don't look stressed or preoccupied with something else.

Don't challenge or disagree with what they are saying - remember, your goal is to establish rapport and collect some initial information about the person. and if you do want to voice out your disagreement - pay attention to your tone of voice.

2. Pay attention at tone of voice

The tone can make a lot of difference in how what you are saying is perceived - loudness, the pitch, the speed with which you talk - all of them have an effect on the listener and what you are saying. Add positive emotion to what you are saying.

3. Be interested in the people you’re talking to

Show genuine interest in what the person is saying and ask them follow-up questions.

4. Actively listen

Use your body language - facial expressions nodding, eye contact, and don't use your phone during a conversation. Empathize and share your genuine emotions and thoughts.

4 non-verbal tips:

  1. When approached by someone, put on hold what you're doing. Show the other person they have your attention. At the same time, don't approach people who are busy, especially at work, just for the sake of small talk.
  2. Smile! You know, for some people, who don't have smiling by default in their culture, it may seem like a fake smile. But in North America smiling is considered to be polite. Just like holding the door for someone. Or not invading someone's personal space. Or saying hello. So leave your poker face for poker games. It may be unusual for you in the beginning, but you'll get used to smiling. Plus there's an interesting correlation here according to scientists. When people are cheerful, they smile. And vice versa, if you smile, it will boost your mood!
  3. Be mindful of your body language. don't cross your arms or legs, nod, and if it makes you more comfortable - use gestures to emphasize what you're saying. Don't stand too close to another person - give them personal space.
  4. Make sure your breath is fresh and you follow good hygiene. No one likes Mr Stinky.
